CURATING LIFE

The Handbook on Inspiration.

Lesson #4: WE ARE ALL DESIGNERS

"From when we open our eyes in the morning till we lay our head on the pillow again at night we are all designers. We each make countless choices that contribute to forming our lives, easing our day to day existence and creating our identities. Although we often don't make these decisions consciously, they influence not only ourselves, but our surroundings and self-image."
words of Thomas Dickson / Dansk Design Book

All of your personal things & unique ways.
clothes. jewelry. shoes. hairstyle. make-up. calendar. car. bike. furniture. home. food. ..................

Where & what you buy, where you go on vacation, where you live & how you live are all extensions of a person's creative actions. Even when we think we aren't making a decision, we're making one anyway. The importance of proper, well thought out decision making is crucial to the way your life is designed....

Why not take a couple extra minutes and do some research on the products you are buying and choices you are making....after all, it is your LIFE!!

PLEASE TRY TO SHOP LOCAL FIRST. MADE LOCAL, SOLD LOCAL, FROM LOCALS. BE THE DESIGNER MAKING CHOICES THAT MATTER.

SPRING SUMMER WINTER FALL

The Handbook on Inspiration.

Lesson #3: SEASONAL DESIGN

As we are experiencing yet another change in the seasons....along comes a shift in weather, nature, moods, social activities, work, trends, fashion, interiors, food....etc, etc, etc.

What an amazing gift of inspiration from the universe! Four times a year we accept and adapt to these organic and inorganic shifts, invoking new thoughts and patterns in our somewhat regular routines.

Designers often look to the fashion industry for inspiration....and because fashion is so dependant on seasonal changes, it is hard not to get trapped in a particular season for a project that should actually transcend all seasons.

Nature, for this very reason, has always been my core collaborator. It is unpredictable, not trendy, organic, and most importantly, something we will have to deal with forever.

Designing a home or structure that can be enjoyed ALL YEAR ROUND is paramount. One should never deny the earthly elements when piecing together a clients wishes and wants, because nature is ultimately who decides whether your hard work and ideas stay or go.

TAP IN>>>TO CREATIVITY

The Handbook on Inspiration.

LESSON #2: When You Can't 'BUILD'

As an architect or designer, you feel passionate about building. Whether you are aiming to create a space for; a community to gather, a family to better utilize their main living area, an office building for millions, a cook to enjoy their kitchen more efficiently....it is all meeting some need concerning your "life's work" within this vast industry.

With a world in financial crisis, many architects and designers are left without knowing if they will be the next to go when the office is downsizing. Or if you are a small firm, what your next job will be...and how to maintain your business if it becomes months before the next project arises.

Something else to think about....
Even when you are living amongst a thriving economy and you are still finding yourself NOT 'building'....instead of holding on to your many years of schooling and that laundry list of credentials, why not do something you do best.....BE CREATIVE!

You can prepare in so many ways, but there is always the unexpected. Don't be caught off gaurd....Expect to HAVE TO BE CREATIVE in these days.

GO 'BUILD' from your creative energy....
confidence
clients
an audience
a business
a brand
a website
a garden
a relationship
KNOWLEDGE!

Some amazing inspiration comes from author Leonard Koren. A trained architect that created an avant-garde publication, out of Venice, CALIFORNIA, called WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing.

AIA 25 YEAR AWARD>FRANK GEHRY.

The American Institute of Architects has announced the winner of its 2012 25 Year Award. The Gehry Residence, the longtime home of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, has been recognized for its contribution to design history and its continuing importance as an architectural touchstone over two decades since its construction.

Honored on its completion by, among others, The New York Times‘ Paul Goldberger, the Gehry House exudes the irreverent, DIY spirit of the designer during the early phase of his career. Humble materials like wooden 2X4′s and chain-link fencing wind in a series of seemingly arbitrary configurations around the shell of a conventional suburban house. As the AIA noted in its commendation, “The exposed structure, chaotic fusion of disparate materials, and aggressive juxtaposition of old and new communicate a sense of real-time formal evolution and conflict.”

Though doubtless causing some consternation among its neighbors (one of whom is rumored to have shot a bullet through a window), the house instantly caught the attention of the architecture world. In 1988, it was included by Philip Johnson in the Museum of Modern Art’s Deconstructivist Architecture exhibition, helping to launch Gehry into the starchitectural stratosphere.

The architect will receive the award at the AIA’s National Convention in May of this year.

When i lived in LA i would often make a day of finding all the amazing homes and buildings that display rather unusual architecture. Frank Gehry's home in Santa Monica was one of the more frequented. It has changed form quite a bit since he orignialy moved in...and what an interesting form it has become.
California was where i became so sure i was destined to be apart of the design world. Having a plethora of world renown architects and designers out your door was so comforting...i felt there was never a day i couldn't easily be reminded, through lectures, classes, installations, openings, museums, buildings & homes...why i chose this industry to be apart of my life's work.

CONSTANT CHALLENGE 4 POSITIVE CHANGE

The HANDBOOK on Inspiration.

Living in HAWAII, the most remote island chain, poses amazing challenges... and if you focus on the positive, life reveals an abundance of creative energy.

All designers seek out different avenues to stimulate the next project. i like to chose my specific location to ultimately be the muse for all projects. currently living on the island of MAUI, i find it hard to harness my inspirational moments. sometimes it is almost paralyzing; the amount of ideas or potential projects are simply overwhelming. lately i decided to dig a bit deeper and focus more time in each area of interest or inspiration....thus sparking the need to share.

Lesson #1:
ALL PROJECTS ARE UNIQUE.
Especially in HAWAII or where ever you are...take in the community and culture, natural and man-made, to shape your project.
Accepting the changes on a daily level and then seeing the positive within all major or minor challenges gives you an undeniable sense of accomplishment.

TORI RICHARD TEXTILE LOVE & HAWAIIAN HOLIDAZE

*image TORI RICHARD

The Tori Richard Ltd resort wear company as founded in 1956 by Mortimer "Mort" Feldman and his future wife Janice Moody. The company fact that surprises most people is that there is no such person as Tori Richard. The company was named after Janice's daughter Victoria (Tori) and Mort's son Richard. The company is and has been for some time under the guidance of another of Mort's sons, Josh Feldman.

In the company's early years, Tori Richard specialized in women's resort wear but in 1969 Liberty House requested some men's shirts made from Tori Richard's signature prints. Those shirts were a huge success and by the 1980's their menswear line was selling more then their women's wear line.

Known for its original prints and incorporation of various textiles and fabrics, Tori Richard prides itself on its ability to introduce and re-introduce powerful visual statements in its design. Tori Richard has digitized almost 14,000 textile prints. Feldman believes it is almost every print Tori Richard has created in its 50 years, and says they are great resources to which designers and artists can refer. Aside from recycling and integrating these timeless prints into new designs, Tori Richard looks at trends and cultures from around the world for inspiration. Inspirations can come from Mexico to Borneo to Thailand, says Feldman. Currently there are eight in-house Tori Richard artists who concentrate solely on creating prints. True to their roots, but always innovative, Tori Richard produces some of the finest "Aloha" wear you can purchase.

Bruce Goff (1904-1982)

“Goff’s idiosyncratic floorplans, attention to spatial effect, and use of recycled and/or unconventional materials such as gilded zebrawood, cellophane strips, cake pans, glass cullet, Quonset Hut ribs, ashtrays, and white turkey feathers, challenge conventional distinctions between order and disorder.”
